Bordeaux is a handsome city of pale stone buildings along the Garonne, and much of its centre is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. On the riverfront, the Place de la Bourse reflects in the Miroir d'eau, a shallow water mirror that is especially striking at dusk.
The Cité du Vin, a museum designed to evoke wine swirling in a glass, tells the story of wine around the world, and tours run out to the châteaux of the Médoc and the medieval wine village of St Emilion.
The Atlantic coast is about an hour away, where the Dune du Pilat is the tallest sand dune in Europe.
