A walled city on the Adriatic, with island trips and clear seas.
Dubrovnik's old town is ringed by stone walls almost two kilometres long, and walking the full circuit gives views over the terracotta roofs and out to sea. Inside, the marble main street, the Stradun, leads past churches, palaces and the Rector's Palace.
A cable car climbs Mount Srđ behind the city for sunset views, and a short ferry crosses to the island of Lokrum, a nature reserve with peacocks and swimming spots. Fans of Game of Thrones will spot many filming locations.
The old town is busy in high summer, so June and September are good months to visit, and the Elaphiti islands and Cavtat are easy day trips.
