Black volcanic landscapes, white villages and calm beaches in the Canaries.
Lanzarote is shaped by volcanoes. Eruptions in the 1730s covered around a quarter of the island in lava, and today you can tour the fire mountains of Timanfaya National Park, where the ground is still hot enough to cook on.
The artist César Manrique did much to protect the island's look, with low white houses and no billboards, and his works, such as the cave concert hall at Jameos del Agua, are among the main sights. The whole island is a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve.
Puerto del Carmen, Costa Teguise and Playa Blanca are the main resorts, and the Papagayo beaches near Playa Blanca are known for their clear water.
