LYS · France
Known as the food capital of France, with Renaissance lanes and two rivers.
Lyon is often called the food capital of France, and eating well is the point of a visit. Try a traditional bouchon for local dishes, and browse the stalls at Les Halles de Lyon Paul Bocuse, the covered food market named after the chef.
The old town, Vieux Lyon, is one of the largest Renaissance quarters in Europe, with hidden passageways called traboules running between the streets. Above it, the Fourvière basilica and Roman theatres look over the city where the Rhône and Saône rivers meet.
In early December, the Festival of Lights fills the city with illuminations.
