Iceland's colourful capital and the base for the Golden Circle, geysers and northern lights.
Reykjavik is the most northerly capital of any country, small enough to walk around, with colourful houses, the soaring Hallgrímskirkja church and the glass Harpa concert hall on the harbour.
Most visitors use it as a base for day trips. The Golden Circle route takes in Thingvellir National Park, where you can see the rift between two tectonic plates, the Geysir hot springs and the Gullfoss waterfall. The Blue Lagoon spa is near the airport.
From September to April, tours head out of the city in search of the northern lights, and in summer the days are long enough for whale watching late into the evening.
