A lively port city built inside a Roman emperor's palace, with ferries to the islands.
Split grew up inside the walls of the palace that the Roman emperor Diocletian built around AD 300, and today shops, cafés and homes fill its courtyards and cellars. The palace and the old town are a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
The Riva, a broad palm lined promenade, runs along the harbour, and the wooded Marjan hill at the edge of town has walking paths and quiet swimming spots.
Split is the main ferry port for the central Dalmatian islands, with boats to Hvar, Brač and Vis, and the medieval town of Trogir and the waterfalls of Krka National Park make good day trips.
