A city built on water, with canals, palaces and island hopping by boat.
Venice is built on more than a hundred small islands in a lagoon, linked by around 400 bridges, and there are no cars in the historic centre. You get around on foot or by vaporetto, the water buses that run along the Grand Canal.
St Mark's Square is the heart of the city, with the gold mosaics of St Mark's Basilica and the Doge's Palace next door. From the Rialto Bridge you can watch the boat traffic and browse the food market.
Take a boat across the lagoon to Murano for glassmaking and to Burano for its brightly painted houses. Staying overnight lets you see the city quietly in the early morning and evening, after the day visitors have gone.
