Fes el Bali, the old walled medina of Fes, is a UNESCO World Heritage site and one of the largest car free urban areas in the world. Its lanes lead to craft quarters, fountains and the Chouara tannery, where hides are dyed in stone vats.
The Bou Inania and Al Attarine madrasas show fine tile and cedar work, and Al Qarawiyyin, founded in the ninth century, is one of the oldest seats of learning still in use.
