Boa Vista is the third largest island of Cape Verde and one of its quietest, with long white beaches and sand dunes blown in from the Sahara. Most resort hotels sit along Praia de Chaves and the south west coast.
The rusting wreck of the Cabo de Santa Maria lies on the north coast, and the Viana desert is a short drive inland. Loggerhead turtles nest on the beaches in summer, and humpback whales pass offshore in spring.
Boa Vista is sunny for most of the year and one hour behind the UK in winter.
