Chattogram, long known in English as Chittagong, is the second city of Bangladesh and its busiest seaport. It sits where the Karnaphuli river meets the Bay of Bengal, with green hills on its edge.

Watch the sun set over the sea at Patenga beach, walk around Foy's Lake, and visit the Commonwealth War Cemetery. The city is also the starting point for trips to the lakes and hills of Rangamati and Bandarban, and to Cox's Bazar further down the coast.

Entry and visas

Entry rules for Bangladesh depend on the passport you hold and why you are travelling, and they can change. Check the official entry requirements below when you book and again shortly before you go.

Health

Read TravelHealthPro's Bangladesh page and book a travel health appointment well before your trip. It is hot for much of the year, so drink plenty of bottled or treated water, take care in the sun and protect yourself from mosquito bites with covering clothes and repellent.

Money

The currency is the Bangladeshi taka (BDT). Carry some cash for markets, rickshaws and small shops, let your bank know you are travelling and check what your card charges for use abroad.

General information only, not legal or medical advice. Rules change, so check the official source before you travel.
