Rolling tea gardens, river swamps and the shrine of Hazrat Shah Jalal, with nonstop Biman flights from the UK.
Sylhet, in the green north east of Bangladesh, is home to many British Bangladeshi families, and Biman flies there nonstop from London Heathrow. The city is built around the shrine of Hazrat Shah Jalal, one of the most visited places of pilgrimage in the country.
Outside the city the land rises into hills covered in tea gardens. Malnichhara, on the edge of town, dates from 1854. Further out you can take a small boat through the flooded trees of Ratargul Swamp Forest, or see the clear river and stone beds at Jaflong on the Indian border.
Entry rules for Bangladesh depend on the passport you hold and why you are travelling, and they can change. Check the official entry requirements below when you book and again shortly before you go.
Read TravelHealthPro's Bangladesh page and book a travel health appointment well before your trip. Drink bottled or treated water, protect yourself from mosquito bites with covering clothes and repellent, and take care on wet paths and in boats during the rainy season.
The currency is the Bangladeshi taka (BDT). Carry cash for boats, day trips, markets and small shops, let your bank know you are travelling and check what your card charges for use abroad.

November to February is dry, with daytime highs of about 26 to 30°C. Heavy rain falls from April to October, peaking in June, though this is when Ratargul swamp forest is flooded and seen by boat.

Dress modestly and keep your voice low, as the shrine is a place of pilgrimage. Only men may enter the tomb area, and women have a separate section near the entrance. Visitors often feed the catfish in the shrine's pond.
Both are day trips by road from the city. Ratargul is about 26 km away, and you see the forest by local boat from Gowainghat. Jaflong is about 60 km away, roughly a two hour drive.
Osmani International Airport (ZYL) serves Sylhet. Tea gardens such as Malnicherra Tea Estate lie a short distance from the airport.
November to February is the driest and most comfortable time, with daytime highs of about 26 to 30°C. From May to September the rain is very heavy, though that is when most visitors see the flooded Ratargul swamp forest by boat.
