The city of the Prophet's Mosque, a peaceful second stop for Umrah travellers.
Madinah is the second holiest city in Islam, home to Al Masjid an Nabawi, the Prophet's Mosque, with its green dome and white marble courtyards shaded by giant umbrellas. Many Umrah travellers spend a few nights here before or after Makkah.
Beyond the mosque you can visit Quba Mosque, the first mosque in Islam, and Mount Uhud, site of the battle of Uhud. Date farms around the city sell the famous Ajwa dates.
Prince Mohammad bin Abdulaziz International Airport has flights from across the region, and the Haramain high speed railway links Madinah with Makkah and Jeddah. There are no direct flights from the UK.
Entry rules depend on your passport and why you are travelling, and they change, so check the official sources below before you book. Pilgrims use Nusuk, the official Saudi platform, for Umrah information and permits, and should check it again close to their travel dates. GOV.UK's travel advice for Saudi Arabia can advise against travel to some cities and airports at short notice, so read it before you book and again before you travel.
See a travel health professional well before your trip and read TravelHealthPro's Saudi Arabia page and its Hajj and Umrah advice, as pilgrims have their own health entry requirements. Summers are very hot and dry, so drink plenty of water and avoid the midday sun. Winter nights can be cool, so pack a warm layer. Wash your hands often, as coughs and colds spread easily in crowds.
The currency is the Saudi riyal (SAR). Carry some cash for markets and small purchases, tell your bank before you travel and check what your card charges abroad.
General information only, not legal or medical advice. Rules change, so check the official source before you travel.
