Kigali spreads over green hills and is known for its tidy streets and calm pace. The Kigali Genocide Memorial is a moving place to learn about the country's history, and the city has a growing scene of cafés, art galleries and craft markets.
Most visitors come for the mountain gorillas of Volcanoes National Park, about two to three hours' drive away. Nyungwe Forest has chimpanzees, and Akagera National Park in the east has the big five.
The long dry season from June to September is the most popular time to trek.
