SLL · Oman
Southern Oman's palm fringed coast, green in the summer monsoon and home of frankincense.
Salalah, in Oman's Dhofar region, is unlike the rest of the Gulf. From about June to September the khareef monsoon brings mist and drizzle, turning the hills green and drawing visitors from across the region to the waterfalls and cool air.
Out of season the beaches are long and empty, with coconut palms and banana plantations behind them. The ruins of Al Baleed, an old frankincense port, are part of a UNESCO World Heritage site, and the blowholes at Mughsail throw sea spray high into the air.
There are no direct flights from the UK; most travellers connect in Muscat.
