Zanzibar lies off the coast of Tanzania in the Indian Ocean. Stone Town, its old quarter and a UNESCO World Heritage site, is a maze of carved doors, markets and Arab and Swahili houses, with sunset dhow cruises from the waterfront.

The beaches are the other side of the island's charm. Nungwi and Kendwa in the north have water deep enough to swim at all tides, while the east coast has wide lagoons popular with kitesurfers. Spice farm tours, Prison Island's giant tortoises and Jozani Forest's red colobus monkeys fill the days.

Zanzibar pairs well with a safari on the mainland. June to October and December to February are the driest months.
