Spain's capital of grand art museums, leafy parks and late night tapas.
Madrid is Spain's capital and its largest city, set on a high plateau in the middle of the country. Three major art collections sit close together along the Paseo del Prado: the Prado itself, the Reina Sofía, home to Picasso's Guernica, and the Thyssen.
Between galleries you can row a boat on the lake in Retiro Park, tour the Royal Palace or stop for chocolate and churros near Plaza Mayor. Evenings start late here, with dinner rarely before nine.
Fast trains link Madrid with Toledo and Segovia, both easy day trips.
