Luxor, ancient Thebes, is packed with monuments. On the east bank stand the vast temple of Karnak and Luxor Temple, linked by an avenue of sphinxes; on the west bank lie the Valley of the Kings, the temple of Hatshepsut and the Colossi of Memnon.
Many visitors take a hot air balloon over the west bank at sunrise, then cross the river by felucca in the afternoon. Luxor is also the usual start or end of a Nile cruise to Aswan.
The winter months, October to April, are best; summer days are very hot.
